Single and Annual Multi-Trip Policies:
Transits and Stopovers Outside Your Policy Area
If you are travelling through a country that is not included in your policy’s geographical area, the following rules apply.
1. Air-side Transit
You are automatically covered if you remain airside for the duration of your connection.
This means staying on the aircraft, staying within the transit lounge, or otherwise not going through customs and not collecting your baggage.
2. Planned Stopover – Less Than 5 Hours
If you have a short stopover and will be going through customs (leaving the secure airside area), you are automatically covered for up to 5 hours.
Examples include:
Passing through customs to change terminals (rather than transiting airside)
Changing airports
Briefly visiting nearby areas during a short layover
3. Planned Stopover – 5 Hours or More
If you have a stopover that will last 5 hours or longer where you will be going through customs (leaving the secure airside area), you will need to upgrade your area of cover. You can usually upgrade your area of cover in you customer zone, but may need to contact us to do so.
Examples include:
Staying at a hotel near the airport overnight
Exiting the airport to visit nearby areas
4. Unplanned Stopover
If you experience an unexpected stopover such as a diversion, cancellation, or delay, you are automatically covered, subject to conditions:
You must accept any reasonable replacement flight(s) offered by the airline.
If rebooking will take more than 48 hours, or you are not being offered a replacement flight, please contact us as an upgrade may be required depending on circumstances.
Time Calculation
For stopovers, the duration is measured from the moment you exit customs to the moment you pass though airport security and re-enter the airside lounge.
Backpacker Policies:
If you have chosen the Australia and New Zealand or Worldwide excluding USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean options in your Backpacker policy, you are covered for transits and/or stopovers where you can leave the airport.
The cover extends as long as your transit or stopover does not last longer than 96 hours, even if the area is not included on your policy schedule.
