To purchase a CoverForYou travel insurance policy, you must be a permanent resident of the United Kingdom and be registered with a UK doctor (GP).
We understand that residency circumstances can vary, particularly if you study, work or spend extended periods abroad. The following guidance explains how our residency requirements apply in different situations.
You are generally considered a UK resident for the purposes of your CoverForYou policy if:
Your main home is in the UK: The United Kingdom is your primary place of residence.
You are registered with a UK GP: You must be registered with a UK general practitioner at the time of any claim or loss.
You meet our residency requirements: Your living arrangements must satisfy the conditions outlined below.
Your main home is normally the address where:
You live for more than six months (183 days) of the year.
Your main household bills, utility bills or official correspondence are sent.
You maintain your primary residential address.
You may still qualify as a UK resident if you divide your time equally between the UK and another country.
To qualify:
You must designate the UK as your main place of residence.
Your primary household bills and correspondence must be directed to your UK address.
You must remain registered with a UK GP.
Important: Simply having a UK address does not automatically make you eligible. Your circumstances must meet the policy's residency requirements.
Yes. If you're temporarily living away from your family home while attending university, you can still qualify for CoverForYou travel insurance.
This includes students living in university accommodation or privately rented accommodation near their place of study.
You can use either:
Your university address, or
Your parent or family home address.
Choose the address most appropriate to your circumstances, provided your permanent residency and GP registration meet our eligibility requirements.
Yes, provided you meet all the following conditions:
Your main home is currently in the United Kingdom.
You are registered with a UK GP.
Your UK visa remains valid for at least six months after your travel insurance policy ends.
Important: If your visa expires within six months of your policy's end date, you will not meet this eligibility requirement.
Spending an extended period outside the UK does not automatically make you ineligible for CoverForYou travel insurance.
You may still qualify if:
Your main permanent home remains in the UK.
You maintain an active registration with a UK GP.
You continue to meet the other residency and policy eligibility requirements.
If you've spent fewer than 183 days in the UK during the previous year, your residency circumstances may require further consideration.
The UK government's statutory residence rules may help you understand your wider legal or tax residency position.
However, CoverForYou's insurance residency requirements are separate from tax residency rules, so meeting a statutory residence test does not automatically establish eligibility for insurance.
If you're unsure whether you qualify, please contact us before purchasing your policy.
Yes. British Armed Forces personnel posted overseas and using a British Forces Post Office (BFPO) address are treated as UK residents for eligible leisure travel.
To qualify:
You must be a member of the British Armed Forces covered by the BFPO residency exception.
Your leisure trip must begin and end at either your official BFPO address or within the UK.
You must meet the other applicable policy eligibility requirements.
This exception allows eligible military personnel posted overseas to obtain cover for personal holidays.
No. CoverForYou's UK residency eligibility does not extend to people whose permanent residence is in:
The Republic of Ireland
The Isle of Man
The Channel Islands, including Jersey and Guernsey
These locations are not treated as qualifying UK residency locations under our travel insurance policies.
Residents of Northern Ireland are eligible, provided they meet the normal UK residency and GP registration requirements.
Eligible Northern Ireland residents can also depart from airports in the Republic of Ireland, such as Dublin Airport, under the applicable policy arrangements.
Your nationality alone does not determine whether you can purchase CoverForYou travel insurance.
However, foreign nationals or au pairs staying temporarily in the UK will not qualify unless their main permanent home is established in the UK.
To be eligible, you must:
Have your main permanent residence in the UK.
Be registered with a UK GP.
Meet any applicable visa validity requirements.
Satisfy the other eligibility requirements of your policy.
If you're working temporarily in the UK but your permanent home remains overseas, you will not normally qualify.
If your circumstances don't clearly fit one of the examples above, we recommend contacting our team before purchasing your travel insurance.
This is particularly important if you:
Divide your time between different countries.
Have recently moved to the UK.
Are living in the UK under a visa.
Have spent an extended period living or travelling overseas.
Are temporarily working or studying in the UK.
Are unsure whether your permanent home meets our residency criteria.
Our team can help clarify the eligibility requirements applicable to your circumstances.
Please note: Eligibility is subject to your policy's residency requirements, terms, conditions and exclusions. All insurance cover is also subject to the applicable policy limits and excesses.
