Can I Still Get CoverForYou Travel Insurance If I’ve Been Abroad for More Than Six Months?

Find out how extended time abroad can affect your eligibility for CoverForYou travel insurance.

Can I still get CoverForYou travel insurance if I've been abroad for more than six months?

Yes, you may still be eligible.

Spending more than six months outside the UK does not automatically make you ineligible for CoverForYou travel insurance.

The key requirements are that you:

  • Remain permanently resident in the UK.

  • Remain registered with a UK GP.

  • Continue to meet the other eligibility requirements of your policy.

Does the number of days I spend in the UK decide whether I am eligible?

Not on its own.

CoverForYou's policy wording does not use a fixed 183-day residency test.

If you spend extended periods abroad or divide your time between countries, the important question is whether the UK remains your permanent place of residence.

Factors such as where your main home is and whether you remain registered with a UK GP may be relevant when considering your circumstances.

What if I have spent fewer than 183 days in the UK?

You may still be eligible.

The UK Government's statutory residence rules are mainly used to determine tax residency and are separate from CoverForYou's insurance eligibility requirements.

Meeting, or not meeting, a tax residency test does not automatically determine whether you are eligible for CoverForYou travel insurance.

You can review the UK Government's guidance on residence status if you need information about your wider legal or tax residency position.

Can I buy a policy while I am already travelling?

No.

Even if you remain a permanent UK resident, CoverForYou cannot provide cover for a trip that has already begun when you purchase the insurance.

You should arrange your policy before starting your trip.

What if I am unsure whether I still qualify as a UK resident?

If you spend substantial periods outside the UK or your residency circumstances are unusual, please contact CoverForYou before purchasing.

Our team can explain the insurance residency requirements that apply to your circumstances, although we cannot determine your legal or tax residency status.

Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
