What geographical areas of travel insurance cover are available?

Explains the travel destination zones including countries included in Europe Restricted and Unrestricted, and specific destination rules for Backpacker and Annual policies.

CoverForYou offers five geographical areas of travel insurance cover, ranging from Europe to worldwide destinations.

When purchasing your policy, you must select a geographical area that includes every destination you intend to visit.

Your selected area of cover will be confirmed on your policy schedule.

Important: FCDO Travel Advice

Your policy does not provide cover for travel to countries or regions where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel or all but essential travel.

This applies regardless of which geographical area you purchase, including Worldwide cover.

Always check the latest FCDO travel advice before travelling.

Area 1 – Europe Restricted

Europe Restricted (Area 1) provides cover for a range of European destinations at a more limited geographical level.

Which destinations are included?

The following countries and territories are included:

  • A–C: Åland Islands, Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Channel Islands, Corsica, Croatia and Czechia.

  • D–G: Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar and Guernsey.

  • H–M: Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Jersey, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madeira, Moldova, Monaco and Montenegro.

  • N–S: Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Sardinia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands, Sweden and Switzerland.

  • U–V: United Kingdom and Vatican City.

Which destinations are excluded?

Area 1 does not include:

  • Cyprus

  • Greece, including the Greek Islands

  • Malta

  • Spain, including the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands

If your trip includes any of these destinations, you must select Area 2 – Europe Unrestricted or another suitable geographical area.

Are there any restrictions?

  • Single Trip: Available.

  • Annual Multi-Trip: Not available.

  • Backpacker: Not available.

If you're purchasing an Annual Multi-Trip or Backpacker policy for Europe, you must select Area 2 or another suitable geographical area.

Schengen visa requirements

Europe Restricted (Area 1) is not valid for Schengen visa insurance requirements.

If you need travel insurance for a Schengen visa application, select an appropriate policy under Area 2 and ensure it meets the other requirements of your visa.

Area 2 – Europe Unrestricted

Europe Unrestricted (Area 2) provides our wider European geographical cover.

It includes all destinations listed under Area 1, plus the destinations excluded from Europe Restricted.

Which additional destinations are included?

Area 2 includes:

  • Cyprus

  • Greece, including the Greek Islands

  • Malta

  • Spain, including the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands

All other destinations listed under Area 1 are also included.

This means Area 2 is suitable for customers visiting multiple European destinations, subject to FCDO advice and the terms of their policy.

Is Area 2 suitable for a Schengen visa?

Yes, Area 2 is the geographical option intended for Schengen visa insurance requirements.

However, you must also check that your chosen policy meets the relevant visa requirements, including:

  • Minimum medical insurance cover.

  • Emergency medical treatment and repatriation benefits.

  • The required period of insurance.

Selecting Area 2 does not automatically guarantee that every requirement of your visa application has been met.

Are all European destinations included?

No. Some destinations that are geographically or politically associated with Europe are allocated to different geographical areas under CoverForYou's destination list.

For example:

  • Turkey: Area 4 – Worldwide Excluding USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

  • Azores: Area 4 – Worldwide Excluding USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

If you're unsure about a particular destination, please contact us before purchasing your policy.

The appropriate area is determined by the destination requiring the widest geographical cover.

How do geographical areas work for Backpacker policies?

If you're purchasing a Backpacker travel insurance policy, you must select one geographical area that covers your intended journey.

Can I select individual destination countries?

No. Our Backpacker quotation system requires you to select a geographical area rather than enter a list of individual countries.

For example:

  • Backpacking around Europe: Area 2 may be suitable.

  • Travelling around Southeast Asia: Area 4 may be suitable.

  • Travelling through Thailand, Australia and New Zealand: Area 4 may be suitable.

  • Travelling through Canada, the USA or Mexico: Area 5 is required.

Please note: Area 1 is not available for Backpacker policies.

Your selected geographical area must include all your intended destinations.

What if I choose the wrong geographical area?

If your policy does not include a country you intend to visit, you may not have insurance cover for that destination.

If you realise that you've selected the wrong area, contact us before travelling so we can check whether your policy can be amended.

You can access your existing policy through your Customer Zone.
