Which Geographical Area of Travel Insurance Cover Do I Need?

Compare CoverForYou’s five geographical areas and find out which option you need for Europe, Australia, worldwide travel and multi-country trips.

Which geographical area of travel insurance cover do I need?

CoverForYou offers five geographical areas of travel insurance cover, ranging from selected European destinations to worldwide cover.

When purchasing your policy, you must choose an area that includes every destination you intend to visit during your trip.

Your selected geographical area will be shown on your policy schedule.

Important: FCDO travel advice

Your geographical area does not override Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice.

If you travel to a country, region or area while the FCDO advises against all travel or all but essential travel, cover will generally be excluded.

Your policy may provide cancellation or curtailment cover if new FCDO advice is issued after you have booked your trip or while you are travelling, subject to the policy terms and exclusions.

Always check the latest FCDO travel advice before travelling.

Area 1 – Europe Restricted

Europe Restricted (Area 1) covers selected European destinations.

Which destinations are included in Area 1?

Area 1 includes:

  • A–C: Åland Islands, Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Channel Islands, Corsica, Croatia and Czechia.

  • D–G: Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar and Guernsey.

  • H–M: Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Jersey, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madeira, Moldova, Monaco and Montenegro.

  • N–S: Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Sardinia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands, Sweden and Switzerland.

Which European destinations are not included in Area 1?

Area 1 does not include:

  • Cyprus.

  • Greece, including the Greek Islands.

  • Malta.

  • Spain, including the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands.

If your trip includes any of these destinations, you will need Area 2 – Europe Unrestricted or another geographical area that includes your complete itinerary.

Which policy types can use Area 1?

  • Single Trip: Available.

  • Annual Multi-Trip: Not available.

  • Backpacker: Not available.

If you are purchasing Annual Multi-Trip or Backpacker cover for Europe, select Area 2 or another suitable geographical area.

Can I use Area 1 for a Schengen visa?

No.

Europe Restricted (Area 1) is not intended for Schengen visa insurance requirements.

If you need insurance for a Schengen visa application, choose an appropriate policy under Area 2 and make sure the policy also satisfies the other requirements of your visa application.

Area 2 – Europe Unrestricted

Europe Unrestricted (Area 2) provides wider European cover.

It includes all destinations listed under Area 1, plus:

  • Cyprus.

  • Greece, including the Greek Islands.

  • Malta.

  • Spain, including the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands.

Is Area 2 suitable for a Schengen visa?

Area 2 is the geographical option intended for customers who require cover for Schengen destinations.

However, choosing Area 2 does not by itself guarantee that your travel insurance meets every requirement of a particular visa application.

You should also check requirements such as:

  • Minimum medical cover.

  • Emergency medical treatment and repatriation cover.

  • Required dates and duration of insurance.

  • Any other requirements imposed by the relevant embassy, consulate or visa authority.

Does Area 2 include every destination associated with Europe?

Some destinations are placed in different CoverForYou geographical areas.

For example:

  • Turkey: Area 4 – Worldwide Excluding USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

  • Check the latest FCDO travel advice.

Choose the geographical area that includes every destination on your itinerary.

  • France and Italy: Area 1 may be suitable for a Single Trip policy.

  • France and Spain: Area 2.

  • Greece and Cyprus: Area 2.

  • Thailand and Vietnam: Area 4.

Where destinations fall into different areas, choose the area that provides the geographical cover required for your complete itinerary.

How do geographical areas work for Backpacker policies?

For a Backpacker policy, you select one geographical area that covers your intended journey rather than entering each individual destination.

For example:

  • Backpacking around Europe may require Area 2.

  • Travelling around Southeast Asia may require Area 4.

  • Travelling through Thailand, Australia and New Zealand may require Area 4.

  • Travelling through Canada, the USA or Mexico requires Area 5.

Area 1 is not available for Backpacker policies.

Your selected area must include all of your intended destinations.

What if I choose the wrong geographical area?

If your policy does not include a country you intend to visit, you may not have cover while travelling there.

If you realise that you have selected the wrong area, contact us before travelling so we can check whether your policy can be amended.

You can also access your existing policy through your Customer Zone.

Please contact us before purchasing if you are unsure which area applies, particularly if you are:

  • Visiting several countries.

  • Travelling to islands or overseas territories.

  • Taking a Backpacker trip across several regions.
