Am I Covered for Transit and Airport Stopovers Outside My Policy Area?

Guidelines for air-side transit, planned stopovers under and over 5 hours, unplanned flight diversions

Q: Am I covered if my flight has a connection or a stopover in a country that is outside my selected geographical area of cover?

A: If you are traveling through a country not included in your policy’s geographical area, your cover depends on how long you stay and whether you leave the airport:

1. Air-Side Transit (Always Covered)

  • You are automatically covered if you remain "air-side" for the entire duration of your flight connection.

  • This means you stay on the aircraft, stay entirely within the secure airport transit lounge, do not pass through border customs, and do not collect your luggage.

2. Planned Stopovers Under 5 Hours (Automatically Covered)

  • If you have a short layover and need to pass through customs to leave the secure air-side area, you are automatically covered for up to 5 hours.

  • This applies to scenarios such as passing through customs to change airport terminals, changing airports entirely, or briefly stepping outside during a short layover.

3. Planned Stopovers of 5 Hours or More (Upgrade Required)

  • If your stopover lasts 5 hours or longer and you leave the secure air-side area by going through customs, your current policy will not cover you. You must upgrade your geographical area of cover.

  • This applies to scenarios such as staying at a hotel near the airport overnight or exiting the airport to sightsee.

  • How to upgrade: You can usually upgrade your area of cover directly online through your Customer Zone, though you can also contact us if you need assistance.

4. Unplanned Stopovers (Flight Diversions & Delays)

  • If you experience an unexpected stopover due to an emergency flight diversion, cancellation, or severe delay, you are automatically covered provided that:

    • You accept any reasonable replacement flights offered to you by the airline.

    • Important: If rebooking your flight will take more than 48 hours, or if the airline fails to offer you a replacement flight, please contact us immediately as a policy upgrade may be required depending on the circumstances.

How We Measure Stopover Time

For all planned stopovers, your time is calculated from the exact moment you pass through customs into the public area to the moment you pass back through airport security to re-enter the air-side departure lounge.

Money-Saving Tip for Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) Holders

If you have an Annual Multi-Trip policy and just one of your planned trips falls outside your covered area, it is often more cost-effective to buy a separate, standalone Single Trip policy for that specific holiday rather than upgrading your entire annual policy.

Please note: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and any applicable excess.
