What Does ‘War’ Mean in My Travel Insurance Policy?

Understand what CoverForYou’s policy means by war and how war-related events can affect your travel insurance cover.

What does 'war' mean in my travel insurance policy?

Under your CoverForYou travel insurance policy, war includes more than formally declared conflicts between countries.

The policy definition includes a range of military actions, hostile activities, civil disturbances and other forms of conflict.

What is included in the definition of war?

For the purposes of your policy, war includes:

  • Acts of war.

  • Invasion.

  • Acts of foreign enemies.

  • Hostilities or warlike operations, whether war is declared or not.

  • Civil war.

  • Terrorism.

  • Rebellion.

  • Revolution.

  • Insurrection.

  • Civil commotion.

  • Civil unrest that resembles or amounts to an uprising.

  • Military or seizure of power.

  • Nuclear, chemical or biological attack.

Does war have to be officially declared?

No.

The policy specifically includes hostilities or warlike operations whether war is declared or not.

This means an event can fall within the policy definition of war even where there has been no formal declaration of war.

How can war affect my travel insurance cover?

War and related events are subject to important policy exclusions.

As a general rule, claims arising directly or indirectly from war, invasion, hostilities, civil war, rebellion, terrorism and related events are excluded.

However, there are specific exceptions within the policy for:

  • Section 2 – Medical Emergency and Repatriation Expenses

  • Section 6 – Personal Accident

These exceptions do not apply where the loss is caused by a nuclear, chemical or biological attack, or where the relevant disturbances were already taking place when your trip began.

Other sections of the policy may also contain their own exclusions relating to war or terrorism.

What if the FCDO advises against travel?

You should always check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice before travelling.

Your policy generally excludes cover if you travel to a country, specific area or event while the FCDO or another relevant regulatory authority advises against all travel or all but essential travel.

Separate cancellation or curtailment provisions may apply where qualifying new FCDO advice is issued after you booked your trip or while you are travelling, subject to the policy terms and exclusions.

Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
