Can I get travel insurance if I have a terminal medical diagnosis?

Find out how a terminal medical diagnosis or palliative care affects your eligibility for CoverForYou travel insurance and when medical screening may be possible.

If you've received a terminal medical diagnosis, your eligibility for CoverForYou travel insurance depends on your medical prognosis and whether you're receiving palliative care.

Our policies have specific eligibility requirements for terminal illnesses. However, not every serious medical diagnosis automatically prevents you from applying for cover.

Can I get travel insurance with a terminal illness?

Your eligibility depends on your circumstances and the medical prognosis provided by your healthcare professional.

When can CoverForYou not provide cover?

We cannot provide travel insurance if either of the following applies:

  • Life expectancy of less than 12 months: A medical professional has confirmed that your life expectancy is less than 12 months.

  • Receiving active palliative care: Your medical treatment has transitioned into active palliative care.

If either condition applies, you will not meet our eligibility requirements, and we cannot provide travel insurance or medical cover under our standard policies.

What if my life expectancy is more than 12 months?

You may still be eligible to apply for travel insurance if your medical prognosis explicitly confirms a life expectancy of more than 12 months.

In these circumstances, your diagnosis does not automatically exclude you from applying.

However, your medical condition must be assessed through our medical screening process to determine whether cover can be offered.

Depending on the assessment:

  • Cover may be available subject to specific conditions.

  • Certain medical conditions or complications may be excluded.

  • Additional restrictions may apply.

  • We may be unable to offer cover based on the medical information provided.

Important: A prognosis of more than 12 months does not guarantee acceptance. Eligibility is determined by the outcome of your medical screening.

How do I find out if I'm eligible?

If your prognosis is more than 12 months and you're considering purchasing travel insurance, we recommend speaking with our medical screening team before booking or travelling.

They can review your medical information and explain whether cover may be available.

Medical Screening Team

Telephone: 0203 137 8981

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm (UK time).

You should provide accurate and complete information about your diagnosis, prognosis and treatment during the screening process.

What if I'm unsure about my prognosis?

If you're unsure whether your diagnosis meets our eligibility criteria, we recommend discussing your medical circumstances with your treating doctor or specialist.

They can help clarify your prognosis and whether you're medically fit to travel.

Once you have this information, our medical screening team can explain how the policy's eligibility requirements apply.

Please note: Being medically fit to travel does not automatically mean your condition meets our insurance eligibility requirements.

Important: All cover is subject to your policy's medical eligibility requirements, terms, conditions, exclusions, benefit limits and any applicable excess. Any decision to offer cover is subject to the outcome of medical screening.
