Emergency Medical Assistance and Claims Information

What funeral and repatriation expenses are covered?

Under Section 2 – Medical Emergency and Repatriation Expenses, eligible costs may include:

  • Funeral expenses abroad: Costs of funeral arrangements in the country where the death occurred.

  • Repatriation of the body: The cost of returning the deceased person's body home.

  • Repatriation of ashes: The cost of returning the deceased person's ashes home.

The policy provides for funeral expenses abroad plus the applicable cost of returning the body or ashes home.

All expenses remain subject to the policy's terms, conditions and applicable benefit limits.

Please note: The funeral expenses benefit applies to expenses incurred abroad. Funeral costs incurred in the UK following repatriation are not included under this benefit.

What if the insured person dies during a trip within the UK?

If an insured person dies during an eligible trip within their home area, the policy may cover the reasonable additional cost of returning their body or ashes home.

This is different from the funeral expenses abroad benefit.

Can travelling companions claim if they need to return home early?

If an insured person's death means another traveller needs to cut their trip short, they may be able to claim eligible unused travel and accommodation expenses under the Cancellation or Curtailment section of their own policy.

This will depend on the circumstances, the relationship to the deceased person and the applicable policy conditions.

What documents are needed for a claim?

The claims team may request:

  • A copy of the death certificate.

  • Funeral or cremation invoices and receipts.

  • Repatriation invoices and supporting documentation.

  • Details of any other travel, household or other insurance that may cover the same expenses.

  • Further supporting evidence relevant to the claim.

You should keep copies of all documents and correspondence.
