Can I Cancel My Trip and Get a Refund?

Explains the specific, covered reasons that allow you to claim for a refund on your unused travel and accommodation costs before your trip begins.

Q: Am I able to cancel my trip and claim for a refund under my policy?

All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and any applicable excess.

Covered as standard :

A: If you are forced to cancel your trip, your policy will reimburse your proportion of irrecoverable, unused travel and accommodation costs, alongside pre-paid charges, provided you cancel for one of the specific reasons below:

Medical & Personal Emergencies

  • Illness, Injury, or Death: The unexpected death, serious injury, illness, disease, or sudden pregnancy complication affecting you, your travel companion, a close relative, or a colleague.

  • International Relatives: This cover extends to your close relatives regardless of where they reside in the world. For example, if a grandparent living in Australia or the USA becomes severely ill or passes away unexpectedly after you purchase the policy, you are eligible to claim.

  • Travel Companions: A travel companion is defined as any person you are traveling with or have arranged to stay with during your trip. They do not need to be insured under your specific policy for your cancellation cover to apply.

Legal, Work, & Official Obligations

  • Legal Duties: Being called for jury service or summoned as a witness in a court of law (excluding professional or advisory roles).

  • Quarantine: Being placed under compulsory personal quarantine by medical authorities.

  • Home Emergencies: The police or local authorities requesting you to remain at home or return home due to a serious incident at your property.

  • Redundancy: You or your travel companion facing qualifying, involuntary redundancy.

  • Emergency Services Leave: You or your travel companion having official leave withdrawn, provided you are a member of the Armed Forces, Emergency Services, public sector medical/nursing professions, or a senior government employee.

Transport Failures & Travel Advice

  • 12-Hour Flight Rule: No suitable alternative public transport is provided within 12 hours of your scheduled departure time following a delay or cancellation at your final UK departure point.

  • FCDO Advice Changes: The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or another regulatory authority officially advising against travel to your destination within 21 days of your departure date.

Please note: FCDO advice changes caused by war, terrorism, pandemics, or regional quarantines are strictly excluded.

Extended Cancellation Protection (With Travel Disruption upgrade)

If you have purchased the optional Travel Disruption Cover (TDC) add-on, your cancellation protection is significantly expanded. You can also claim a refund for your trip before departure under these specific scenarios:

  • Natural Disaster or Bankruptcy: A natural catastrophe hits your destination, or your accommodation provider/booking agent goes completely out of business.

  • Missed International Departure: You fail to arrive at your international departure point in time to board your transport, causing you to miss 50% or more of your trip, due to a road accident, vehicle breakdown, sudden traffic incident, severe weather, or the failure of other public transport.

  • Last-Minute Schedule Changes: Your public transport operator changes your departure or return times within 7 days of your trip, and the new schedule forces you to miss 50% or more of your holiday.

  • Stolen Travel Documents: Your passport or travel visa is stolen within 72 hours of your departure, making it physically impossible for you to go.

  • Overbooking: You are involuntarily bumped from your flight or transport because it is overbooked, and no alternative is provided within the policy timeframe.

Please note: Please check your policy wording for the full list of exclusions and conditions. All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and any applicable excess.
