What is "Curtailment" and How is Cutting a Trip Short Calculated?

Defines cutting a trip short (curtailment) due to early return, hospitalization, or quarantine, and explains how claim payouts are calculated.

Q: What does it mean to "curtail" my trip, and how are these claims calculated?

A: Curtailment means cutting your holiday short after you have already left your home. Under our policy definitions, your trip is considered curtailed if:

  • Early Return: You are forced to cut your trip short and return directly to your home in the UK early; or

  • Hospitalization or Quarantine: You are admitted to an international hospital as an in-patient, or are strictly confined to your accommodation abroad due to a compulsory personal quarantine, for a continuous period exceeding 24 hours.

How Curtailment Claims Are Calculated

  • Night-by-Night Basis: Payouts are calculated strictly based on the specific number of nights you missed due to your early return, or the number of nights you spent hospitalized, quarantined, or confined to your room.

  • Who Can Claim: For room confinement or hospitalization, financial compensation is primarily paid out for the specific insured person who is ill, injured, or quarantined.

  • Traveling Companions: If our Emergency Medical Assistance Service formally agrees that it is necessary for another insured companion (including any dependent children) to stay behind with you, the policy will also cover that companion’s proportion of unused travel and accommodation costs.

Please note: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and any applicable excess.
