What is trip curtailment and how is my claim calculated?

Understand what counts as cutting your trip short, how curtailment claims are calculated and when travelling companions may also be covered.

What is trip curtailment?

Curtailment means cutting your trip short after you have already left home.

Under your travel insurance policy, your trip is considered curtailed if:

  • Early return: You are forced to cut your trip short and return directly to your home in the UK earlier than planned.

  • Hospitalisation: You are admitted to a hospital abroad as an in-patient for a continuous period exceeding 24 hours.

  • Compulsory quarantine: You are strictly confined to your accommodation abroad due to a compulsory personal quarantine for a continuous period exceeding 24 hours.

How are curtailment claims calculated?

Curtailment claims are calculated on a night-by-night basis, according to the number of nights affected.

This includes:

  • Returning home early: The number of nights you miss because you have returned to the UK before your scheduled departure date.

  • Hospitalisation: The number of nights you spend admitted to hospital abroad.

  • Compulsory quarantine: The number of nights you spend confined to your accommodation due to compulsory personal quarantine.

The amount payable depends on the circumstances of your claim and the applicable policy terms.

Can my travelling companions also claim?

For hospitalisation or compulsory quarantine, compensation generally applies to the insured person who is ill, injured or quarantined.

However, if our Emergency Medical Assistance Service agrees that it is necessary for another insured travelling companion, including any dependent children, to remain with you, their proportion of unused travel and accommodation costs may also be covered.

This must be agreed by our Emergency Medical Assistance Service.

Important: All curtailment claims are subject to your policy's terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
