Baggage and Personal Belongings Cover Explained

Details what items are covered under baggage, how "new for old" claims and single article limits work, and the strict rules regarding item ownership.

Q: What is covered under my personal belongings and baggage cover?

A: Our baggage section protects your personal possessions if they are lost, damaged, or stolen while you are on your trip. To understand your cover, it helps to know how our policy defines your belongings:

What Counts as Baggage?

  • General Baggage: This includes any items belonging to you that are worn, used, or carried by you during your trip (such as clothing, shoes, toiletries, suitcases, prams, buggies, prescribed glasses, and sunglasses).

  • What Baggage Excludes: This definition strictly excludes valuables, gadgets, ski equipment, sports equipment, personal money, and important documents (which may have separate limits under a different section or require specific upgrades).

What Counts as Valuables?

Valuables are subject to specific sub-limits and are defined strictly as the following list of items (including any associated equipment):

  • Jewellery

  • Watches (applies to manual or automatic movement watches only; excludes smartwatches and fitness trackers, which are defined as gadgets)

  • Telescopes

  • Binoculars

  • Cameras (applies to analogue cameras only; excludes digital cameras, which are defined as gadgets)

⚠ The Strict Ownership Rule

To file a successful claim, you must legally own the items you are claiming for. Proof of ownership is mandatory. If you are carrying an item that belongs to a friend, or if you are transporting luggage or medical equipment to help someone else, no cover applies to those items under your policy.

How We Calculate Payouts ("New for Old" & Limits):

  • No Wear and Tear Deductions: Your claims are settled on a "new for old" basis, meaning you are entitled to the full replacement cost of your items with no depreciation deductions for age or wear.

  • How "New for Old" is Calculated: If you bought an item for £500 two years ago, we calculate your settlement based on what that exact same item costs to buy brand new today. If the item is no longer available, we would consider an appropriate comparison. If there is no appropriate comparison, we would revert to settling based on the amount you initially purchased it for, up to your single article limit.

  • The Single Article Limit: This is the maximum amount the policy will pay out for any one individual item, regardless of its original cost. For example, if you claim for an item that cost £500, but your policy's single article limit is £300, the maximum payout you will receive for that item is £300.

Please note: Claims for specialist sports equipment, ski equipment, and golf equipment require the purchase of specific optional policy upgrades. All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and any applicable excess. Full details can be found in the policy wording.
