Your travel insurance provides cover for personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during your trip, subject to your policy terms and cover limits.
Your policy distinguishes between general baggage, valuables and other items that may require separate cover.
Baggage includes personal items that belong to you and are worn, used or carried during your trip, such as:
Clothing and footwear
Toiletries and personal accessories
Suitcases and travel bags
Prams and buggies
Prescription glasses and sunglasses
The definition of baggage does not include:
Valuables
Gadgets, including smartphones, tablets and digital cameras
Ski equipment
Sports equipment
Personal money
Important documents
These items may be covered under separate policy sections, have different limits or require an optional upgrade.
Your policy specifically defines valuables as:
Jewellery
Watches with manual or automatic movements
Telescopes
Binoculars
Analogue cameras
Associated equipment is also included within the definition of valuables.
Important distinctions:
Smartwatches and fitness trackers are classified as gadgets, not valuables.
Digital cameras are classified as gadgets, not valuables.
Analogue cameras are classified as valuables.
Valuables are subject to specific policy sub-limits, which may differ from your general baggage limits.
Yes. You must legally own any item you are claiming for, and proof of ownership is mandatory.
Items belonging to someone else are not covered under your policy, even if you are carrying them during your trip.
For example:
Borrowed belongings from a friend are not covered.
Luggage you are transporting on someone else's behalf is not covered.
Medical equipment belonging to another person is not covered.
Baggage claims are settled on a "new for old" basis, meaning no depreciation is deducted for the age or wear of your belongings.
The settlement is based on the current cost of purchasing the same item brand new.
For example, if you purchased an item for £500 two years ago:
We assess what the same item costs to purchase new today.
If that item is no longer available, we consider an appropriate comparable replacement.
If no appropriate comparison is available, the settlement is based on your original purchase price, subject to your single article limit.
All settlements remain subject to the applicable policy limits, terms and conditions.
The single article limit is the maximum amount your policy will pay for any one individual item, regardless of its replacement value.
Example:
Your item costs £500 to replace.
Your policy has a single article limit of £300.
The maximum payable for that item is £300, before any applicable excess.
Your actual limits depend on your policy and level of cover.
Certain types of equipment require optional policy upgrades.
These include:
Specialist sports equipment
Ski equipment
Golf equipment
You must purchase the relevant optional upgrade for cover to apply to these items.
Important: All claims are subject to your policy's terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess. Please refer to your policy wording for the full details of your baggage and personal belongings cover.
