Q: Are sports and adventure activities covered under my travel insurance policy?
A: Yes, we cover a wide range of sports and activities, which are organized into four distinct tiers called Activity Packs. To ensure you are fully protected while participating, please review how these packs and their rules work:
1. How the Activity Packs Work
Activity Pack 0 (Standard Cover): This pack is included automatically in all of our travel insurance policies at no extra cost. It covers a broad range of standard, low-risk holiday activities.
Optional Packs (1 to 3): Activity Packs 1, 2, and 3 are optional upgrades that cover higher-risk or adventure sports. These require the payment of an additional premium.
The Cascading Rule: Our packs cascade downwards. This means if you buy a higher-tier pack, it automatically includes all the sports listed in the packs below it. For example, purchasing Activity Pack 3 automatically covers everything in Pack 3, Pack 2, Pack 1, and Pack 0.
2. Important Rules for Sports Cover:
To ensure your cover remains valid while participating in any sport or activity, you must meet the following criteria:
Recreational Only: You must participate on a strictly recreational, non-professional, and non-competitive basis.
Legal and Safe: Your involvement in the sport must fully comply with all local laws and regulations. You must also wear and use the officially recommended safety gear or protective equipment at all times.
⚠ The Strict Competition Exclusion
As a general rule, competitions and competitive sports are completely excluded from our coverage unless they are explicitly listed as covered in your policy documents or on our website. This exclusion applies to all levels of play. You do not need to be a paid professional for an activity to count as a competition.
An activity is considered a non-covered competition if it meets any of the following:
It is a formal event or organized contest where participants are ranked, scored, timed, judged, or placed.
There is a prize, medal, trophy, title, official qualification, or league standing on the line.
The primary purpose of the event is to compete against others rather than purely participating for personal leisure.
This includes youth sports, amateur tournaments, club-level matches, school competitions, and even structured "friendly" tournaments.
What to Do If an Activity Isn't Covered
Our travel insurance policies are designed to cover your needs seamlessly. If you are planning a trip or want to take part in a sport or activity that isn't covered as standard, please contact our call centre. We may be able to refer your request directly to our underwriters (the insurer of your policy) to check if they are able to provide specialized cover for you.
For existing policies, please note that if you choose to participate in an activity that we do not cover and hasn't been approved, no cover will apply for any claims arising directly or indirectly from that specific activity while you are taking part.
