Understanding Sporting Equipment Cover

Explains the rules for protecting sports gear, bicycles, and rental equipment against loss, theft, or damage, alongside essential tracking documentation like airline PIR reports.

Q: Is my sporting equipment covered under the policy if it is lost, stolen, or damaged?

A: Yes, your sporting equipment can be covered during your trip, but its protection is strictly tied to whether the specific sport itself is covered by your policy. Please review our equipment rules and requirements below:

1. The Core Sports Rule

  • Sport Must Be Covered: We cannot pay an equipment claim if your policy does not explicitly cover the sport or activity you are participating in.

  • Standard vs. Upgrades: For sports covered under standard terms (such as cycling), your gear (like a bicycle) is protected under standard baggage rules. However, specialized activities require their corresponding policy extensions. For instance, to cover golf clubs, you must have purchased the Golf Cover add-on; similarly, skiing or snowboarding gear requires the Winter Sports upgrade.

2. How Payouts and Damage Claims Work

  • New for Old (No Wear and Tear Deductions): If your sports equipment is stolen, lost, or damaged by a travel supplier, your claim is settled on a "new for old" basis. This means you are entitled to the full replacement cost of the items today, with no deductions made for their age, wear, or depreciation.

  • Loss or Damage by Airlines: If an airline loses or damages your equipment while in their care, you must report the incident immediately to the airline before leaving the airport. You must obtain an official Property Irregularity Report (PIR) within the specific time boundaries stated in the airline's terms and conditions.

  • Bicycles, E-Bikes, and E-Scooters: These items are covered while checked with a commercial travel carrier. Any loss, theft, or damage must happen—and be reported in writing—while they are in the official care of a carrier, transport provider, authority, hotel, or accommodation provider.

  • ⚠ Single Article Limit Warning: While bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters are included under baggage cover, our standard single article limit applies to each item. If you are traveling with a high-value bike, this limit may not be high enough to cover its full replacement cost. In these circumstances, you should consider purchasing specialized bicycle insurance.

3. Sporting Equipment Rental Cover

If you have the appropriate Golf or Winter Sports upgrades on your policy schedule, you are also protected by our Rental Cover:

  • What it pays for: We will reimburse the necessary costs you incur to rent replacement ski gear or golf clubs while abroad if your own equipment is stolen, damaged, or temporarily delayed by a travel supplier for more than 12 hours on your outward journey.

Please note: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and any applicable excess. Full details can be found in the policy wording.
