How long does Backpacker travel insurance last, and can I return to the UK?

Find out how long Backpacker travel insurance lasts, Winter Sports limits, and the rules for temporary visits to the UK, including when cover stops and restarts.

CoverForYou Backpacker travel insurance is designed for extended trips, allowing you to travel for up to 18 months when purchasing directly from us.

Unlike Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies, Backpacker cover also allows you to make temporary visits home to the UK during your journey, subject to specific conditions.

How long can I travel on a Backpacker policy?

If you purchase your Backpacker policy directly through CoverForYou, you can obtain cover for a trip lasting up to 18 months.

This makes Backpacker insurance suitable for longer holidays, gap years and extended travel across multiple destinations.

Your policy must cover the full duration of your intended journey and include the appropriate geographical area for the countries you plan to visit.

What if I purchased my policy through a comparison website?

Maximum trip durations may differ if you purchased your Backpacker policy through a price comparison website, such as:

  • Compare the Market

  • Go.Compare

  • Confused.com

  • MoneySuperMarket

Please check your policy wording and validation certificate to confirm the maximum duration applicable to your cover.

How much Winter Sports cover can I have?

If you've purchased the optional Winter Sports upgrade, you'll have a maximum of 17 days of winter sports cover during your Backpacker trip.

This is the total allowance for the entire insured journey, not 17 days per destination.

For example, you could spend seven days skiing in one destination and ten days in another, provided you stay within your 17-day allowance and meet the other policy conditions.

Can I return to the UK during my Backpacker trip?

Yes. You can make temporary visits to the UK without automatically ending your Backpacker policy, provided you stay within the permitted number of visits and duration limits.

The allowance depends on your level of cover.

Silver and Gold Backpacker Policies

You can make:

  • 1 temporary return visit to the UK.

  • For a maximum of 14 days.

Platinum Backpacker Policies

You can make:

  • Up to 2 temporary return visits to the UK.

  • For a combined maximum of 31 days.

For example, if you have a Platinum Backpacker policy, you could return to the UK for 14 days on one occasion and 17 days on another.

The combined duration must not exceed 31 days.

What if I need to stay in the UK longer?

If you need to exceed your permitted UK visit allowance, please contact our customer service team.

Depending on your circumstances, we may be able to offer an extended stay option, subject to additional eligibility requirements.

Important: Do not assume an extended stay is automatically permitted. Any additional arrangements must be agreed with us.

Am I insured while visiting the UK?

No. Your Backpacker insurance cover is suspended during temporary return visits to the UK.

This means you cannot claim for events occurring during the excluded return period, including:

  • Medical emergencies or treatment while in the UK.

  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

  • Missed or delayed flights.

  • Other travel-related losses arising during your return visit.

When does my cover stop?

Your Backpacker cover stops when you depart from your overseas destination to return to the UK.

This means your journey back to the UK is not covered under your Backpacker policy during a temporary return visit.

When does my cover restart?

Your insurance automatically resumes when you arrive back at your international destination to continue your Backpacker trip.

Your journey from the UK back to your overseas destination is not covered while your insurance is suspended.

Important: Cover resumes only if you remain within your permitted UK visit allowance and meet the other terms and conditions of your policy.
