Why does travel insurance cost more when I buy it further in advance?
Travel insurance is generally best purchased as soon as you book your trip, so that you have cancellation cover in place from the point your policy begins.
However, you may notice that the premium is higher when you buy your policy further in advance.
This is because the insurer is providing cover for a longer period before your trip begins, meaning there is more time during which something could happen that leads to a cancellation claim.
Why is buying early still important?
Waiting until shortly before departure may reduce the amount you pay for the policy, but it can also leave you without cancellation cover for events that happen before you buy it.
For example, if something happens after you book your holiday but before you purchase your insurance, you may not be covered if that event later causes you to cancel your trip.
