What Does It Mean to Curtail My Trip?

Understand what counts as curtailment and how claims are calculated if you return home early or are hospitalised or quarantined during your trip.

What does it mean to curtail my trip?

Curtailment, or cutting short your trip, means either:

  • Leaving your trip early and returning directly to your home; or

  • Being admitted as an in-patient to a hospital outside your home area for more than 24 hours; or

  • Being confined to your accommodation abroad for more than 24 hours because of a personal quarantine.

How is a curtailment claim calculated?

Claims are calculated according to:

  • The number of nights of your trip missed because you returned home early; or

  • The number of nights you were hospitalised, quarantined or confined to your accommodation.

What if another insured person needs to stay with me?

For hospitalisation, quarantine or confinement claims, payment normally applies to the insured person who is ill, injured, quarantined or confined.

However, if we or the Emergency Medical Assistance Service agree that another insured person, including children travelling with them, needs to remain with you, we can also consider that insured person's proportion of unused travel and accommodation costs.
