Yes, in some circumstances.
The rules depend on your policy type, how long the stopover lasts and whether you remain airside.
You are automatically covered if you remain airside for the whole connection.
This includes situations where you:
Stay on the aircraft.
Remain within the airport transit lounge.
Do not pass through customs.
Do not collect your baggage.
If you leave the secure airside area and pass through customs, you are automatically covered for a planned stopover of less than 5 hours.
Examples include:
Passing through customs to change terminals.
Changing airports.
Briefly visiting nearby areas during a short layover.
If you leave the secure airside area and your planned stopover lasts 5 hours or more, you will need to upgrade your geographical area of cover.
You can usually do this through your Customer Zone, although you may need to contact us.
Examples include:
Staying overnight in a hotel near the airport.
Leaving the airport to visit the local area.
If you have an unexpected stopover because of a diversion, cancellation or delay, you are automatically covered, subject to the policy conditions.
You must accept any reasonable replacement flight offered by the airline.
If:
Rebooking will take more than 48 hours; or
You are not being offered a replacement flight,
please contact us, as an upgrade may be required depending on the circumstances.
For stopovers where you leave the airside area, the duration is measured from:
The time you exit customs; to
The time you pass through airport security again and re-enter the airside area.
If your Backpacker policy includes either:
Australia and New Zealand; or
Worldwide excluding USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean,
you are covered for transits and stopovers outside your selected policy area where you leave the airport, provided the transit or stopover lasts no longer than 96 hours.
This applies even where the transit country is not included in the geographical area shown on your policy schedule.
Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
