What Medical Circumstances Are Not Covered After I Buy My Policy?

Understand the medical circumstances that can invalidate cover after purchase, including travelling against medical advice, undeclared conditions and planned treatment abroad.

What medical circumstances are not covered after I buy my policy?

After purchasing your policy, you will not be covered for claims arising directly or indirectly from certain medical circumstances.

Travelling against medical advice

There is no cover if you travel when:

  • A medical practitioner has advised you not to travel; or

  • A medical practitioner would have advised you not to travel if you had sought their advice.

Travelling to receive treatment, surgery or investigations

There is no cover if you travel with the intention of receiving:

  • Surgery.

  • Medical treatment.

  • Medical investigations.

This also includes costs arising from:

  • Another medical condition discovered during the planned procedure, treatment or investigation.

  • Complications resulting from the procedure, treatment or investigation.

Not following prescribed treatment

There is no cover for a medical condition if you are not following the treatment recommended by a medical practitioner or are not taking prescribed medication as directed.

Not meeting a transport provider's health requirements

There is no cover if you travel against health requirements set by:

  • Your carrier.

  • The carrier's handling agents.

  • Another public transport provider.

Awaiting a diagnosis

There is no cover for a medical condition that you are aware of but have not yet received a diagnosis for when you purchase the policy.

Undeclared medical conditions

A medical condition affecting you must be:

  • Declared to us where required.

  • Accepted by us.

  • Shown on your policy certificate.

If a condition that should have been declared has not been accepted and shown on your policy certificate, claims arising from that condition will not be covered.

Medical conditions affecting close relatives or colleagues

There is no cover for claims arising from a medical condition affecting a close relative or colleague where, at the relevant time, it could reasonably have been expected to result in a claim under your policy.

Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
