What Should I Do If My Health Changes After Buying Travel Insurance?

Find out what to do if your health changes after buying your CoverForYou policy, including new diagnoses, medication, investigations and fitness to travel.

What should I do if my health changes after buying travel insurance?

If your health changes after purchasing your CoverForYou travel insurance, you should review whether the change affects your medical declaration or your fitness to travel.

This can include:

  • A new medical diagnosis.

  • Changes to an existing medical condition.

  • New or changed medication.

  • New treatment.

  • Referral for tests or investigations.

  • Awaiting treatment or further medical assessment.

A change in your health does not automatically mean your policy is no longer valid, but it can affect the cover available for that medical condition.

What if my health changes before my trip?

If your medical circumstances change before you travel, please contact our Medical Screening Team so your circumstances can be reviewed.

This is particularly important if you:

  • Receive a new diagnosis.

  • Develop new or worsening symptoms.

  • Start or change medication.

  • Are referred for medical tests or investigations.

  • Are awaiting treatment, surgery or further assessment.

Updating your medical information does not automatically mean that a new or changed condition will be covered. Any cover will depend on the policy terms and the outcome of the medical screening.

How do I update my medical information?

Contact our Medical Screening Team:

Telephone: 0203 137 8981
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm UK time.

Do I need to check that I'm fit to travel?

Yes.

If your health changes after your policy has started and after your travel tickets or booking confirmation have been issued, you should check with your medical practitioner that you are fit to travel.

You should not travel if a medical practitioner advises you not to do so.

What if my doctor advises me not to travel?

If you travel against medical advice, you will not be covered under:

  • Section 2 – Medical Emergency and Repatriation Expenses

  • Section 8 – Cruise Cover

for claims arising from the relevant circumstances.

The policy also applies this restriction where a medical practitioner would have advised you not to travel had you sought their advice.

What if I'm medically unfit to travel?

If it is medically necessary for you to cancel your trip, you may be able to make a claim under Section 1 – Cancelling or Cutting Short a Trip.

For a medical cancellation claim, you may need evidence from a medical practitioner confirming that you or your travelling companion are not fit to travel.

Any claim remains subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions and benefit limits.

What if I'm waiting for tests or investigations?

Please contact us before travelling if you have been referred for tests or investigations or are awaiting a diagnosis.

The policy contains specific restrictions relating to medical conditions that are awaiting investigation or diagnosis, so you should not assume that the condition will automatically be covered.

What if I am awaiting treatment or surgery?

If your health changes and you are waiting for treatment, surgery or further medical assessment, contact us before travelling so your circumstances can be reviewed.

The policy does not cover travel undertaken for the purpose of receiving surgery, treatment or investigations.

Can I change my travel dates if my health changes?

You may be able to make changes to your policy or travel dates, depending on your circumstances.

Please contact CoverForYou before changing your travel arrangements so we can confirm whether the requested policy change can be made and whether any additional premium or conditions apply.
