What Medical Circumstances Could Affect My Travel Insurance Cover?

Understand how undeclared medical conditions, travelling against medical advice, planned treatment and other medical circumstances can affect your travel insurance.

Certain medical circumstances can affect your CoverForYou travel insurance, particularly if you have an undeclared medical condition, travel against medical advice or travel abroad specifically to receive treatment.

Depending on your circumstances, exclusions may apply to claims under:

  • Section 1: Cancelling or Cutting Short a Trip.

  • Section 2: Medical Emergency and Repatriation Expenses.

  • Section 6: Personal Accident.

  • Section 8: Cruise Cover.

These restrictions apply to claims arising directly or indirectly from the relevant medical circumstances. Other general exclusions and policy conditions may also apply.

What medical circumstances can affect my cover?

1. Undeclared pre-existing medical conditions

You must declare your pre-existing medical conditions as required by your policy.

If a condition has not been declared and accepted for cover, claims arising from it may be excluded.

Failing to declare a condition may result in a claim being refused or the amount paid being reduced, even if the claim is not related to the undisclosed condition.

2. Medical conditions awaiting diagnosis

If, when purchasing your policy, you've been referred for investigations at a hospital, clinic or nursing home but have not yet received a diagnosis, claims arising from that undiagnosed condition may be excluded under the relevant policy sections.

Contact us before purchasing if you're awaiting medical investigations.

3. Travelling against medical advice

Your policy excludes certain claims if you travel when:

  • A medical practitioner has advised you not to travel.

  • A medical practitioner would have advised you not to travel if you had sought their advice.

If you travel against medical advice, you will not be covered under Section 2 – Medical Emergency and Repatriation Expenses or Section 8 – Cruise Cover for claims arising from the relevant circumstances.

If you're medically unfit to travel, you may instead be eligible for cancellation cover under Section 1, subject to the policy conditions.

4. Travelling abroad for planned medical treatment

Your policy excludes claims arising from travelling specifically to receive:

  • Surgery.

  • Medical treatment.

  • Tests or investigations.

This includes expenses resulting from other medical conditions discovered during the planned treatment and complications arising from those procedures.

Travel insurance is designed to cover eligible unforeseen events, not planned medical treatment abroad.

5. Not following prescribed treatment

Claims arising from a medical condition may be excluded if you:

  • Do not follow the treatment recommended by your medical practitioner.

  • Do not take prescribed medication as directed.

6. Not meeting a transport provider's health requirements

Cover may be excluded if you travel against the health requirements established by your airline, another carrier or their handling agents.

7. Known medical circumstances affecting relatives or colleagues

Claims may be excluded where, at the time you purchased your policy, you were already aware of a medical condition affecting you, a close relative or a colleague that could reasonably have been expected to result in a claim.

For example, if a close relative is already seriously ill when you purchase your policy, you should not assume cancellation or curtailment resulting from that known illness will be covered.

How do I make sure my medical conditions are covered?

When purchasing travel insurance:

  1. Declare the medical conditions required by the screening process.

  2. Answer the medical questions accurately.

  3. Review the quotation, including any additional premium and applicable terms.

  4. Purchase the policy if the cover offered meets your needs.

If CoverForYou offers a quotation following medical screening, it reflects the terms on which we can insure your declared conditions.

Once you've purchased the policy, your declared and accepted medical conditions will be covered in accordance with the policy terms and any applicable exclusions.

You do not need separate written approval after completing medical screening and purchasing the policy on the terms quoted.

What if my health changes after buying my policy?

If you develop a new condition, your symptoms change or you are referred for further investigations after purchasing your policy, contact us to check whether your cover may be affected.

A change in health does not automatically invalidate your insurance.

You should also check with your medical practitioner that you're fit to travel.
