What Cover Do I Have for Personal Belongings, Baggage and Passports?

Find out what personal belongings are covered, what happens if your baggage is delayed, and what evidence you may need to make a claim.

What cover do I have for personal belongings, baggage and passports?

Your policy includes cover for certain personal belongings that are accidentally lost, stolen or damaged during your trip, subject to the limits and exclusions shown in your policy.

What personal belongings are covered?

The Personal Belongings and Money section can cover:

  • Baggage.

  • Valuables.

  • Personal money.

  • Cash.

  • Important documents, including your passport, while outside your home area.

Your policy defines baggage as items belonging to you that are worn, used or carried during your trip.

Some items have their own separate cover and are not treated as standard baggage, including:

  • Gadgets.

  • Ski equipment.

  • Golf equipment.

  • Other sports equipment in certain circumstances.

You should check the relevant section of your policy for these items.

What happens if my belongings are lost, stolen or damaged?

If an eligible item is accidentally lost, stolen or damaged during your trip, the policy can pay up to the applicable limit.

For covered baggage and valuables, claims are settled at the full replacement cost without deductions for depreciation or wear and tear, subject to the policy limits and conditions.

What if my baggage is delayed?

If your baggage is temporarily lost in transit or delayed because of a carrier error on your outward journey, cover is available for replacement essential items once the delay reaches at least 12 hours.

This can include necessary items such as clothing and toiletries.

Delayed baggage cover does not apply to delays on your return journey.

Are my passport and important travel documents covered?

Yes.

If your passport or another important document is lost, stolen or damaged while you are outside your home area, the policy can contribute towards the cost of obtaining a replacement.

This includes reasonable travel and accommodation costs required to reach an embassy or other appropriate authority so that you can:

  • Continue your trip; or

  • Return home.

You should check whether any temporary documentation issued will allow you to continue with your planned journey.

Does Travel Disruption Cover provide additional passport protection?

Yes.

If you have purchased Travel Disruption Cover, additional cancellation cover may apply if:

  • Your passport or visa is stolen within 72 hours before your scheduled departure; and

  • The theft means you are unable to continue with your trip as planned.

Travel Disruption Cover must be shown on your policy schedule for this additional protection to apply.

Are my belongings covered before my trip starts?

Standard Personal Belongings cover applies while you are on your trip.

However, if you have Travel Disruption Cover, the additional passport and visa protection described above can apply to qualifying theft within 72 hours before departure.

What should I do if something is lost, stolen or damaged?

The evidence you need will depend on what happened.

You may be asked to provide:

  • A Police report and crime reference or incident number for theft.

  • A written report from the carrier, transport company, hotel or accommodation provider where appropriate.

  • A Property Irregularity Report (PIR) if an airline loses, steals or damages your baggage.

  • Proof of purchase or ownership, such as receipts, valuations or bank or card statements.

  • A repair estimate or confirmation that an item is beyond repair.

  • Travel tickets and baggage tags.

  • Confirmation from the carrier showing how long your baggage was delayed.

If an airline is responsible for the loss, theft or damage, you must report it within the timeframe set out in the airline's terms and conditions.

Where can I find the full limits and exclusions?

Your policy wording contains the full details of:

  • Cover limits.

  • Single-item and category limits.

  • Claims evidence requirements.

  • Exclusions and security requirements.

  • Cover for gadgets, sports equipment, ski equipment and golf equipment.

  • Travel Disruption Cover.

Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
