Travel Disruption Cover (TDC) is an optional upgrade that provides additional protection when certain unexpected events disrupt your trip.
It can provide extra cover for:
Cancelling or cutting short your trip.
Additional accommodation or public transport costs needed to continue your trip.
Certain delays and involuntary denied boarding.
Accommodation provider insolvency.
Catastrophes.
Certain passport or visa thefts.
Travel Disruption Cover must be purchased and shown on your policy schedule for these additional benefits to apply.
Important: Travel Disruption Cover does not cover every type of disruption. The event must meet the specific conditions of your policy.
Travel Disruption Cover extends the circumstances in which you may be able to claim for eligible unused travel, accommodation and other pre-paid costs.
You may be covered if you need to cancel or cut short your trip because of:
Insolvency of your accommodation provider or their booking agent.
A catastrophe as defined by the policy.
The policy's definition of a catastrophe includes:
Fire.
Flood.
Earthquake.
Explosion.
Volcanic eruption or volcanic ash clouds.
Tsunami.
Landslide.
Avalanche.
Hurricane.
Storm.
An outbreak of food poisoning which means you cannot use your booked accommodation.
For cancellation, you may be covered where:
Your booked public transport is delayed or cancelled; and
No suitable alternative public transport is provided within 12 hours of the scheduled departure time.
Cover is subject to the policy terms and exclusions.
You may also be covered if you are involuntarily denied boarding because there are more passengers than available seats and no suitable alternative public transport is provided within the required timeframe.
You may be able to cancel and claim if you fail to reach your international departure point in time to board your booked public transport because of:
Failure of other public transport.
An accident to or breakdown of the vehicle you are travelling in.
An accident, breakdown or unexpected traffic incident causing an unexpected delay.
Adverse weather.
For this benefit to apply:
You must be unable to arrange suitable alternative public transport; and
The disruption must result in you missing 50% or more of your trip.
You may be covered for cancellation where your public transport provider rearranges your departure or return:
Within 7 days of your original planned departure or return; and
The new schedule means you will miss 50% or more of your trip.
Travel Disruption Cover may also help if your passport or visa is stolen:
Within 72 hours before your scheduled departure, meaning you cannot take your trip; or
During your trip, meaning you are unable to continue travelling.
The relevant policy conditions and evidence requirements must be met.
Travel Disruption Cover can also provide additional protection where your trip is disrupted but you are able to continue travelling.
If you are involuntarily denied boarding and no suitable alternative is offered within the timeframe shown in your policy, cover may be available for:
Reasonable additional room-only accommodation.
Reasonable additional economy-class public transport needed to continue your trip.
If a public transport delay means you arrive at your destination more than 12 hours later than planned, Travel Disruption Cover may provide:
A benefit for each qualifying period of delay, up to the policy limit.
A proportion of eligible unused travel and accommodation costs.
This extends the standard delayed-arrival benefit, which applies more narrowly to delays at the final departure point to or from the UK.
Travel Disruption Cover may pay reasonable additional accommodation and public transport expenses, up to the standard of your original booking, where your trip is disrupted because of:
A catastrophe.
Insolvency of your accommodation provider or their booking agent.
Delay or cancellation of your public transport where no suitable alternative is provided within 12 hours.
Involuntary denied boarding where no suitable alternative is offered within the timeframe shown in your policy.
Cover is limited to the amounts shown in your policy's Table of Benefits.
Contact your airline, accommodation provider, tour operator or other travel provider to find out what assistance they can provide.
Depending on the circumstances, this could include:
Alternative transport.
Meals or refreshments.
Accommodation.
A refund.
Compensation under applicable passenger rights.
You must seek any available financial compensation, assistance or refund from your travel provider before claiming those costs through your insurance.
Keep relevant documents and evidence, such as:
Written confirmation of delays or cancellations.
Confirmation of the reason for the disruption.
Booking confirmations.
Details of alternative arrangements offered.
Receipts for eligible additional expenses.
Confirmation of refunds or compensation received or refused.
Additional evidence may be required depending on the type of claim.
If you need to cut your trip short for a covered reason, you must obtain prior approval from the Emergency Medical Assistance Service before arranging your early return.

Travel Disruption Cover does not cover every event or expense.
You cannot claim for unused or additional costs that can be recovered from another source, such as:
Accommodation providers or their booking agents.
Airlines or other transport providers.
Travel agents.
Compensation schemes or ATOL.
Credit or debit card providers.
PayPal.
Cover is not provided for costs relating to a package holiday where:
The package is cancelled by the travel provider; or
You cannot travel because of a change in FCDO travel advice.
You should first contact your package holiday provider about your rights to alternative arrangements or a refund.
Travel Disruption Cover does not provide additional protection for disruption caused by:
War.
Terrorism.
A pandemic.
Regional quarantine.
Your standard policy may provide specific cover in some circumstances, so you should check the relevant section of your policy wording.
Travel Disruption Cover does not add separate cover simply because FCDO travel advice changes.
However, your standard cancellation and curtailment cover may provide protection for certain qualifying changes in FCDO advice, subject to the policy terms and exclusions.
Always check the latest FCDO travel advice before travelling.
Depending on the type of claim, exclusions can also include:
Air Passenger Duty (APD).
Circumstances you knew about before purchasing your policy or booking your trip that could reasonably have been expected to lead to a claim.
Strike or adverse weather that had already been publicly announced before purchasing the policy or within 7 days of booking the trip.
Costs caused by failing to plan your journey correctly or allow enough time to reach your departure point.
Costs outside the circumstances or benefit limits covered by the policy.
No.
