Can I Get Travel Insurance If I Have a Terminal Illness?

Find out how a terminal diagnosis, prognosis and palliative care can affect your eligibility for CoverForYou travel insurance.

Can I get travel insurance if I have a terminal illness?

A terminal or serious medical diagnosis does not necessarily mean that you cannot apply for CoverForYou travel insurance.

Whether we can offer cover depends on your individual medical circumstances and the outcome of our medical screening process.

When can CoverForYou not provide cover?

Under our current medical eligibility rules, we cannot offer cover where:

  • A medical professional has confirmed a life expectancy of less than 12 months; or

  • You are receiving active palliative care.

If either of these applies, you will not meet the medical eligibility requirements for a CoverForYou policy.

What if my prognosis is more than 12 months?

You may still be able to apply if your medical prognosis confirms a life expectancy of more than 12 months and you are not receiving active palliative care.

However, your medical condition must still be declared and assessed through our medical screening process.

Depending on the medical information provided:

  • We may be able to offer cover for the condition.

  • Additional terms or restrictions may apply.

  • An additional premium may be required.

  • We may be unable to provide cover for the condition or offer a policy.

A prognosis of more than 12 months does not guarantee that cover will be available.

Do I need to declare my terminal illness?

Yes.

You must tell us about all pre-existing medical conditions that need to be declared under the policy.

Pre-existing medical conditions are only covered where they have been declared through the medical screening process and we have agreed in writing to cover them.

Failure to declare a relevant medical condition could result in a claim being reduced or refused.

Do I also need to be fit to travel?

Yes.

Even where you meet the medical screening requirements, you must still be medically fit to undertake your trip.

You should not travel if a medical practitioner has advised you not to travel, or would have advised against travel had you sought their advice.

If you travel against medical advice, you will not be covered under:

  • Section 2 – Medical Emergency and Repatriation Expenses

  • Section 8 – Cruise Cover

If it becomes medically necessary for you to cancel your trip instead, you may be able to claim under Section 1 – Cancelling or Cutting Short a Trip, subject to the policy terms.

How do I find out if I'm eligible?

Contact our Medical Screening Team before purchasing your policy.

Telephone: 0203 137 8981
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm UK time.

You should provide complete and accurate information about:

  • Your diagnosis.

  • Your prognosis.

  • Current treatment.

  • Medication.

  • Any planned treatment or investigations.

  • Whether you are receiving palliative care.

Our team can then confirm whether we are able to offer cover and explain any additional terms or premium.

What if I'm unsure about my prognosis?

If you have not been given a clear prognosis, speak to your treating doctor or specialist.

You may need clarification about your prognosis and whether you are medically fit to travel before the medical screening process can be completed.

Being medically fit to travel does not automatically mean that you meet the insurance eligibility requirements.

Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
