Your CoverForYou travel insurance can help with eligible costs if you have to cancel your trip for a reason covered by your policy.
For a covered cancellation, we can pay up to the applicable policy limit for your proportion of irrecoverable, unused travel and accommodation costs and other eligible pre-paid charges.
Standard cancellation cover is included in your policy. Additional reasons for cancellation may be covered if you have purchased the optional Travel Disruption Cover upgrade.
Important: Changing your mind or simply deciding not to travel is not covered. Your reason for cancellation must be one of the circumstances covered by your policy.
You may be covered if you have to cancel because of the:
Death.
Injury.
Illness.
Disease.
Pregnancy complication.
of:
You.
Your travelling companion.
A close relative.
A colleague.
The relevant policy terms and medical exclusions still apply.
No.
A travelling companion is someone you are travelling or staying with, or have arranged to travel or stay with. They do not need to be insured under your CoverForYou policy.
No.
The policy definition of a close relative does not require them to live in the UK.
For example, cancellation may be considered if a close relative living overseas unexpectedly becomes seriously ill and the circumstances otherwise meet the policy requirements.
Standard cancellation cover can also apply for:
You or your travelling companion being placed into a qualifying personal quarantine.
You or your travelling companion being required to:
Attend jury service; or
Attend a court of law as a witness.
Cover does not apply where the court attendance is in an advisory or professional capacity.
Cancellation may be covered where the police or another authority requires you or your travelling companion to stay at or return home.
You or your travelling companion being made redundant, provided the redundancy meets the definition and requirements in the policy.
Voluntary redundancy is not covered.
Cover may apply if previously authorised leave is withdrawn and you or your travelling companion are a member of:
The Armed Forces, including reserves and territorial forces.
The Emergency Services.
The medical or nursing professions in the public sector.
Senior employees of the Government.
Standard cancellation cover may apply where:
Your public transport is delayed or cancelled at the final departure point to or from the UK.
No suitable alternative public transport is provided within 12 hours of the scheduled departure time.
You cancel your trip as a result.
This does not include delays or cancellations arising directly or indirectly from war or terrorism.
Cancellation cover may apply if the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or another relevant regulatory authority advises against all travel or all but essential travel to your destination within 21 days of your departure date.
This standard cancellation benefit does not apply where the advice is issued because of:
Terrorism.
War.
A pandemic.
Regional quarantine.
You can check current advice on the FCDO travel advice website.
If you have purchased Travel Disruption Cover, additional cancellation circumstances are available under Section 1B.
The upgrade must be shown on your policy schedule.
Cover may apply following:
Insolvency of your accommodation provider or its booking agent; or
A catastrophe covered by the policy.
The policy defines a catastrophe as:
Fire.
Flood.
Earthquake.
Explosion.
Volcanic eruption or volcanic ash clouds.
Tsunami.
Landslide.
Avalanche.
Hurricane.
Storm.
An outbreak of food poisoning that means you cannot use your booked accommodation.
Travel Disruption Cover can provide additional cancellation protection where your public transport is delayed or cancelled and no suitable alternative public transport is provided within 12 hours.
Cover may also apply if you are involuntarily denied boarding because there are more passengers than available seats and the relevant policy requirements are met.
With Travel Disruption Cover, cover may apply if your passport or visa is stolen:
Within 72 hours before your scheduled departure for a trip outside your home area; or
During your trip, meaning you are unable to continue.
There are additional security and evidence requirements for passport and visa claims, so check the relevant policy conditions.
Travel Disruption Cover may provide cancellation cover if you fail to reach your international departure point in time because of:
Failure of other public transport.
An accident to or breakdown of the vehicle you are travelling in.
An accident, breakdown or unexpected traffic incident causing an unexpected delay.
Adverse weather conditions.
To qualify for cancellation under this benefit, you must be unable to arrange alternative public transport and the disruption must result in you missing 50% or more of your trip.
Travel Disruption Cover may apply if your public transport provider rearranges your departure or return within 7 days of your original planned departure and the new schedule means you will miss 50% or more of your trip.
For an eligible cancellation claim, the policy can cover your proportion of irrecoverable:
Unused travel costs.
Unused accommodation costs.
Other eligible pre-paid charges.
Pre-paid charges can include certain costs paid or contracted before travel, subject to the policy terms.
For example, some sports-related pre-paid costs are only covered if you have purchased the relevant optional cover.
You cannot claim costs that you can recover from another source.
This can include refunds or compensation available from:
Your accommodation provider or its booking agent.
Your transport provider or its booking agent.
Your travel agent.
A compensation scheme or ATOL.
Your credit or debit card provider.
PayPal.
The policy also excludes Air Passenger Duty (APD), whether or not you can recover it.
If you need to cancel because of a covered event:
Contact your travel providers as soon as possible to find out what can be refunded or rearranged.
Avoid unnecessary additional cancellation charges once you know the trip needs to be cancelled.
Keep your booking invoices and cancellation documents.
Keep evidence of any refunds or amounts that cannot be recovered.
Obtain supporting evidence for the reason you are cancelling, such as medical or official documentation.
Submit your claim with the required evidence.
If you delay telling your travel agent, tour operator, transport provider or accommodation provider that cancellation is necessary, the amount paid may be limited to the cancellation charges that would otherwise have applied.
