What does it mean to cut short or curtail my trip?
Cutting short, sometimes called curtailing, your trip means that one of the following happens after you have left home:
You have to return directly to your home earlier than planned; or
You are admitted to hospital outside your home area as an in-patient for more than 24 hours; or
You are confined to your accommodation abroad because of a personal quarantine for more than 24 hours.
The reason for cutting short your trip must be covered by the policy for a claim to be considered.
How is a curtailment claim calculated?
Curtailment claims are calculated according to the number of nights affected.
This means the claim is based on:
The number of nights of your trip you miss because you return home early; or
The number of nights you are hospitalised, quarantined or confined to your accommodation.
Any payment is also subject to the applicable policy limit and the other terms and exclusions under Section 1 – Cancelling or Cutting Short a Trip.
Who can claim if I am hospitalised or quarantined?
Where the curtailment is because you are hospitalised, quarantined or confined to your accommodation for more than 24 hours, the claim is normally paid for the ill, injured, quarantined or confined insured person.
However, if CoverForYou or the Emergency Medical Assistance Service agrees that another insured person should remain with you, the policy can also cover that person's proportion of unused travel and accommodation costs.
This can include insured children travelling with them.
Do I need approval before returning home early?
Yes.
If you need to return home early and intend to claim for cutting short your trip, you must obtain the prior approval of the Emergency Medical Assistance Service to confirm that returning home is necessary.
Do not make your own arrangements to cut short the trip without contacting the assistance team first where prior approval is required.
