What Does My Baggage and Personal Belongings Cover Include?

Find out what CoverForYou classes as baggage and valuables, how belongings claims are settled and which items need separate or additional cover.

What does my baggage cover include?

Your CoverForYou travel insurance can cover eligible personal belongings that are accidentally lost, damaged or stolen during your trip, subject to the limits, conditions and exclusions of your policy.

The policy distinguishes between:

  • Baggage.

  • Valuables.

  • Sports equipment.

  • Ski equipment.

  • Golf equipment.

  • Gadgets.

  • Personal money and cash.

  • Important documents.

Different limits and conditions can apply to each type of property.

What counts as baggage?

The policy defines baggage as items belonging to you that are worn, used or carried by you during your trip.

This can include everyday travel belongings such as:

  • Clothing and footwear.

  • Toiletries and personal accessories.

  • Suitcases and travel bags.

  • Prams and buggies.

  • Prescription glasses and sunglasses.

What isn't classed as general baggage?

The policy's definition of baggage specifically excludes:

  • Valuables.

  • Gadgets.

  • Ski equipment.

  • Sports equipment.

  • Personal money.

  • Important documents.

This does not necessarily mean these items have no cover. They may be covered separately, have their own limits or require an optional upgrade.

What counts as a valuable?

The policy defines valuables, including associated equipment, as:

  • Jewellery.

  • Watches with manual or automatic movements.

  • Telescopes.

  • Binoculars.

  • Analogue cameras.

What about smartwatches and cameras?

The policy makes some important distinctions:

  • Smartwatches and fitness trackers are treated as gadgets, not valuables.

  • Digital cameras are treated as gadgets.

  • Analogue cameras are treated as valuables.

Gadgets are not covered under the standard baggage benefit. You should check whether you have the appropriate Gadget Cover shown on your policy.

Do the belongings need to belong to me?

Yes.

The policy definition of baggage applies to items that belong to you.

Items belonging to another person are therefore not treated as your baggage simply because you are carrying them during your trip.

You must also be able to provide appropriate evidence to support your claim.

Depending on the item and circumstances, evidence can include:

  • Original receipts.

  • Valuations obtained before the loss.

  • Bank or credit card statements.

  • Other suitable evidence of ownership or purchase.

A claim may not be paid if you are unable to provide sufficient evidence of your loss.

How are baggage claims settled?

For covered baggage and valuables, the policy provides the full replacement cost of the item with no deduction for depreciation or wear and tear.

Any payment remains subject to:

  • The overall benefit limit.

  • Any single article limit.

  • The valuables limit.

  • The circumstances of the loss.

  • The applicable policy exclusions and conditions.

What is a single article limit?

A single article limit is the maximum amount the policy can pay for one individual item.

For example, if an item costs more to replace than the single article limit shown for your level of cover, the claim for that item cannot exceed the applicable single article limit.

Check your policy schedule and Table of Benefits for the limits that apply to your cover.

Is sports equipment covered?

Sports equipment is treated separately from general baggage.

The policy defines sports equipment as items usually worn, carried, used or held while taking part in a recognised sport.

Sports equipment can only be covered where the policy also covers you to participate in the relevant sport or activity.

What about ski equipment?

Ski equipment is not covered under the standard baggage section.

Cover for ski equipment is available under Section 7 – Winter Sports where you have purchased the Winter Sports upgrade and it is shown on your policy schedule.

What about golf equipment?

Golf equipment is also excluded from the standard baggage section.

Cover for golf equipment is available under Section 9 – Golf Cover where the optional upgrade has been purchased and is shown on your policy schedule.

What about gadgets?

Gadgets, including eligible smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, laptops and smartwatches, are not covered as standard baggage.

Check whether Gadget Cover is included on your policy if you need protection for these items.

What about important documents?

Important documents are not classed as general baggage.

The policy provides a separate benefit for eligible important documents, including passports, that are lost, damaged or stolen while outside your home area.

This can help with the cost of obtaining replacement documents so that you can continue your trip or return home, subject to the applicable policy limits and conditions.

What if my baggage is delayed?

The policy can also provide a benefit for replacement essential items where your belongings are temporarily lost in transit or delayed for at least 12 hours because of carrier error during your outward journey.

Keep receipts for any essential replacement items you purchase and obtain confirmation of the delay from the carrier.

Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, cover limits and any applicable excess.
