Am I Covered for Safaris and Bush Trekking?

Find out when safari activities, bush walking, trekking and safari transport are covered, including altitude limits and vehicle safety requirements.

Am I covered for safaris and bush trekking?

Yes. Standard safari activities can be covered under your policy without an additional premium, provided you meet the relevant policy conditions.

This includes safari activities in remote locations. However, the type of activity, altitude and transport arrangements can affect your cover.

What safari activities are covered?

The following activities are covered under the Emergency Medical and Repatriation sections when they form part of a professionally organised tour:

  • Guided 4x4 safaris and game drives.

  • Guided walking safaris.

  • Bush walking and tracking.

  • Travelling as a passenger in a safari 4x4 vehicle, including on unpaved or off-road safari tracks.

  • Medical expenses resulting from an accidental encounter with or attack by wildlife while taking part in the organised safari.

Travelling off-road as a passenger in a safari vehicle does not, by itself, invalidate your Emergency Medical or Repatriation cover.

What altitude limits apply to trekking or tracking?

If your safari includes hiking, trekking, tracking or hill walking, the maximum altitude of the route is important.

  • Up to 2,500 metres above sea level: Covered as standard at no additional cost.

  • 2,501 to 3,500 metres above sea level: You must purchase Sports and Activities Pack 2 or 3 and pay the applicable additional premium.

Your cover must include the highest point of your route

You must have cover for the maximum altitude reached during the activity.

If any part of your route exceeds the altitude limit covered by your policy, the entire trekking activity will not be covered.

What rules apply when travelling in safari vehicles?

You must comply with the relevant safety and insurance requirements.

Helmets and seatbelts

  • You must wear a helmet when driving or riding as a passenger on a motorbike, moped, scooter or assisted bicycle.

  • You must wear a seatbelt in a motorised vehicle where one is available.

Motor insurance and driving licences

You are responsible for ensuring that any vehicle you drive, or travel in as a passenger, has valid motor liability insurance.

If you are travelling as a passenger, the driver must also hold the correct valid driving licence.

Travelling in an uninsured vehicle may invalidate a claim.

Does Personal Liability cover apply when driving a vehicle?

No. The Personal Liability section does not cover liability for damage to third-party property or injury to other people while you are operating a motorised vehicle.

You should make sure appropriate motor liability insurance is in place separately.

What safari-related activities are not covered?

The following remain excluded:

  • Driving quad bikes.

  • Off-road motor rallies.

  • Racing.

  • Organised competitions.

Important: Cover is subject to you taking part on a recreational, non-professional basis and complying with local laws. Any pre-existing medical conditions must be declared as required by your policy. All claims remain subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, evidence requirements and any applicable excess.
