Are Sports and Adventure Activities Covered by My Travel Insurance?

Find out how Activity Packs work, which rules apply when taking part in sports and what happens if an activity is not covered.

Are sports and adventure activities covered?

Yes. Our travel insurance policies cover a wide range of sports and activities through four Activity Packs.

The level of cover depends on which Activity Pack applies to your policy.

How do the Activity Packs work?

Activity Pack 0

Activity Pack 0 is included automatically at no extra cost with our travel insurance policies.

It covers a range of standard, lower-risk holiday activities.

Activity Packs 1, 2 and 3

Activity Packs 1, 2 and 3 are optional upgrades for higher-risk or adventure activities.

An additional premium is payable if you choose one of these packs.

Higher Activity Packs include the lower packs

The Activity Packs work on a cascading basis.

For example, if you purchase Activity Pack 3, you are also covered for activities listed under:

  • Activity Pack 2

  • Activity Pack 1

  • Activity Pack 0

The same principle applies to the other packs.

What rules apply when taking part in an activity?

To remain covered while taking part in an insured sport or activity:

  • You must be participating on a recreational, non-professional and non-competitive basis.

  • You must comply with all applicable local laws and regulations.

  • You must wear and use any officially recommended safety or protective equipment.

Are competitions covered?

As a general rule, competitions and competitive sports are not covered unless they are specifically listed as covered in your policy documents or on our website.

This applies even if you are not a professional or being paid to take part.

An activity may be treated as a competition where:

  • Participants are ranked, scored, timed, judged or placed.

  • A prize, medal, trophy, title, qualification or league position is being contested.

  • The main purpose of the event is to compete against other participants rather than take part purely for recreation.

This can include:

  • Amateur tournaments.

  • Club-level matches.

  • Youth or school competitions.

  • Structured friendly tournaments.

What if the activity I want to do is not covered?

If you are planning to take part in a sport or activity that is not covered by your policy, please contact our customer support team.

We may be able to refer your request to the underwriter of your policy to check whether additional or specialist cover can be offered.

If you already have a policy and choose to take part in an activity that is not covered and has not been approved, no cover will apply to claims arising directly or indirectly from that activity while you are taking part.

Important: All cover is subject to your policy terms, conditions, exclusions and any applicable excess. Please refer to your policy wording for the full list of covered sports and activities and the Activity Pack that applies to each one.
