Do I Need to Declare a Phobia?

Find out when a phobia needs to be declared for travel insurance and what to select during medical screening if your specific phobia isn't listed.

You only need to declare a phobia when purchasing CoverForYou travel insurance if you're receiving treatment for symptoms related to it.

If you have a phobia but are not experiencing symptoms and are not receiving treatment, you do not need to declare it under our current medical screening guidance.

When do I need to declare a phobia?

You need to declare a phobia if you're receiving treatment for symptoms associated with it.

This may include:

  • Prescribed medication to manage symptoms.

  • Counselling or psychological therapy.

  • Other ongoing medical treatment for the phobia.

You should answer all relevant medical screening questions accurately.

What if I have a phobia but don't receive treatment?

If you have a phobia but are not experiencing symptoms and are not receiving treatment, you do not need to declare it.

If you experience symptoms but are unsure whether your circumstances require declaration, contact our Medical Screening Team.

What if my specific phobia isn't listed?

If your particular phobia doesn't appear among the available medical conditions, you can select:

Anxiety

This is the alternative screening category identified in our current guidance.

Selecting this category for screening purposes does not necessarily mean you have been diagnosed with a separate anxiety disorder.

If you're unsure whether it accurately represents your circumstances, contact our Medical Screening Team.

What if I have another diagnosed mental health condition?

If you have another condition alongside your phobia, such as a separately diagnosed anxiety disorder, you may need to declare that condition.

Each condition should be assessed against the relevant medical screening requirements.

If we can offer cover following screening, your quotation will reflect the terms available. Once you've purchased the policy, your declared and accepted conditions will be covered in accordance with those terms.

What if I start receiving treatment after purchasing?

If you begin treatment for your phobia or your medical circumstances change after buying your insurance, contact us to check whether your cover may be affected.
