Not always. Whether you need to declare postnatal depression or another pregnancy-related mental health condition depends on how long the condition lasts and whether it is expected to continue.
Under our current medical screening guidance, a pregnancy-related condition does not need to be declared if:
The symptoms do not continue beyond six months after the pregnancy ends; and
The symptoms are not expected to continue beyond that six-month period.
If your condition continues for longer, or is expected to be ongoing, you may need to declare it.
You must declare postnatal depression if your symptoms continue for more than six months after the pregnancy ends.
You should also contact our Medical Screening Team if your condition is expected to continue beyond that period or is expected to be permanent.
If you experience postnatal depression and your symptoms continue beyond six months after giving birth, you will need to declare Depression during medical screening.
Whether cover is available will depend on the screening outcome.
If your pregnancy-related mental health symptoms resolve within six months after the pregnancy ends and are not expected to continue, you do not need to declare that condition under our current pregnancy-related screening guidance.
However, other medical conditions that independently require declaration must still be disclosed.
If you're receiving medication, counselling, psychological therapy or other treatment for a postnatal mental health condition, contact our Medical Screening Team if you're unsure whether the condition needs to be declared.
The team can clarify which screening requirements apply.
You should not assume that your condition is exempt if symptoms are continuing or their expected duration is uncertain.
You'll be asked to complete medical screening.
If we can offer cover, your quotation will include any additional premium required and applicable terms.
