Am I Covered to Drive a Car, Motorbike or Other Motorised Vehicle Abroad?

Understand when driving abroad is covered under your travel insurance, the licence and safety requirements you must meet, and the important exclusions that apply.

Am I covered to drive a motorised vehicle abroad?

Yes. Your policy can cover you while driving a motorised vehicle abroad, provided:

  • The vehicle is one that you are licensed to drive in the UK.

  • You meet the relevant local licensing and legal requirements.

  • You comply with the safety conditions in your policy.

Quad bikes are excluded.

There is also no cover for:

  • Races.

  • Motor rallies off-road.

  • Competitions.

Does Personal Liability cover apply while I am driving?

No.

There is no cover under Section 5 – Personal Liability while you are driving a motorised vehicle.

You must make sure the vehicle has appropriate motor insurance in place.

What must I do for cover to remain valid?

Wear the required safety equipment

You must:

  • Wear a helmet when driving or riding a motorbike, moped, scooter or assisted bicycle.

  • Wear a seatbelt when travelling in a motorised vehicle where one is available.

Make sure the vehicle is insured

It is your responsibility to ensure that any vehicle you drive has valid motor insurance.

If you drive an uninsured vehicle, this will invalidate any claim under your travel insurance policy.

Hold the correct driving licence

You must hold a full driving licence.

A provisional licence or CBT is not accepted for driving outside the UK.

You must also meet the licensing requirements of the country you are visiting.

Being entitled to drive a particular vehicle in the UK does not automatically mean you are permitted to drive it abroad.

What else should I check before driving abroad?

Driving and vehicle rental requirements vary between countries and rental companies.

Before you travel, check:

  • The minimum driving age in your destination.

  • Any minimum age imposed by the rental company.

  • Whether an additional young-driver charge applies.

  • Whether you need to have held your licence for a minimum number of years.

  • Whether you need an International Driving Permit.

  • Whether you need to provide a driving licence check code.

  • Any local road laws and driving restrictions.

You can check whether you need an International Driving Permit on the GOV.UK International Driving Permit guidance.

You can obtain a driving licence check code using the GOV.UK View or Share Your Driving Licence service.

Am I covered if I cannot hire a vehicle?

No. Your travel insurance does not provide cover simply because you are unable to hire a vehicle.

It is your responsibility to make sure you:

  • Hold the correct licence.

  • Meet the rental company's requirements.

  • Meet local age and licensing requirements.

  • Have the required motor insurance.

  • Comply with local road laws.

Important: All cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions and any applicable excess. Please refer to your policy wording for full details.
