What documents do I need to make a medical or repatriation claim?

Find out which medical reports, hospital bills, receipts and supporting documents you may need when claiming for emergency treatment, repatriation or a death abroad.

If you need to make a claim for emergency medical treatment or repatriation expenses under your CoverForYou travel insurance, you'll need to provide supporting documents.

The documents required depend on the circumstances of your claim, but may include medical reports, invoices, receipts and evidence of any additional expenses.

Keeping accurate records during your trip can help us assess your claim and avoid unnecessary delays.

What medical documents do I need?

Hospital and Treatment Expenses

For emergency medical treatment received abroad, you may need to provide:

  • Hospital bills: Official, itemised invoices or receipts for in-patient or out-patient treatment.

  • Surgery costs: Itemised bills for eligible emergency surgical procedures.

  • Emergency dental treatment: Receipts or invoices showing the treatment provided and amount charged.

  • Medical reports: Relevant documents confirming your diagnosis, treatment and the circumstances of your medical emergency.

Where possible, ask the healthcare provider for an itemised invoice rather than a receipt showing only the total amount paid.

Prescription Medication

If you were prescribed emergency medication during your trip, keep:

  • Pharmacy receipts showing the amount paid.

  • Details of the medication supplied.

  • Any relevant prescription or medical documentation.

Important: Regular prescription medication that you should have brought with you is subject to separate policy exclusions.

What travel and accommodation receipts do I need?

Depending on your circumstances, you may also need evidence of additional travel or accommodation expenses.

Transport to and from Hospital

If you're claiming for eligible taxi journeys to or from a medical facility, your receipt should clearly show:

  • Date of travel.

  • Fare paid.

  • Name of the hospital or medical facility.

  • Location of the hospital or medical facility.

Additional Travel and Accommodation

Keep itemised receipts or invoices for any eligible additional expenses, such as:

  • Public transport.

  • Additional accommodation.

  • Other travel-related costs incurred because of the medical emergency.

Telephone and Communication Expenses

If you've incurred additional telephone or communication costs while contacting our Emergency Medical Assistance Service, keep evidence of those expenses.

This may include itemised telephone bills or other proof of payment.

Please note: Providing a receipt does not automatically mean an expense is covered. All costs must meet your policy's conditions and benefit limits.

Do I need to provide my GHIC or EHIC?

If you received emergency medical treatment in Europe, you may be asked to provide a copy or clear photograph of your:

  • Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), or

  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

These cards may help reduce the cost of eligible state-provided healthcare.

Under your CoverForYou policy, your medical excess can be waived where a valid GHIC or EHIC is used to reduce the cost of eligible emergency treatment at a public hospital within the EU.

Important: You can still make an eligible medical claim without a GHIC or EHIC, although your normal policy excess may apply.

Will I need to provide my UK medical history?

Possibly. Our claims team may request information about your medical history if it's relevant to assessing your claim.

This could include:

  • Relevant medical records from your UK GP.

  • Information about existing medical conditions.

  • Details of previous treatment or diagnoses.

  • Other medical evidence relevant to the circumstances of your claim.

If medical records are required, you may be asked to complete a medical consent or release form so the relevant information can be requested from your GP surgery.

Our claims team will explain what information is needed.

Do I need to declare other insurance policies?

Yes. You must provide details of any other insurance or benefits that may also cover the expenses you're claiming.

This could include:

  • Another travel insurance policy.

  • Travel insurance provided through a bank account.

  • Employer or company insurance benefits.

  • Private medical insurance.

  • Other relevant insurance arrangements.

This helps the claims team establish whether another provider may also be responsible for covering some or all of the expenses.

Important: You cannot receive duplicate reimbursement for the same financial loss.

What documents are needed if an insured person passes away abroad?

If you're making a claim following the death of an insured person while travelling, additional documents will be required.

These may include:

  • Death certificate: An official copy of the deceased person's death certificate.

  • Funeral expenses: Itemised invoices and receipts for eligible funeral or burial arrangements abroad.

  • Cremation expenses: Relevant invoices and receipts for overseas cremation costs, where applicable to the arrangements and policy.

  • Repatriation expenses: Documentation and invoices relating to the return of the deceased person's body or ashes to the UK.

Important: CoverForYou does not cover funeral, burial or cremation expenses incurred after the body or ashes have returned to the United Kingdom.

We recommend contacting our Emergency Medical Assistance Service as soon as possible so the team can provide guidance about the arrangements and supporting documents required.
